TSR volunteers needed

The Texas State Railroad needs volunteers for “The Little Train That Could” event, on March 7, 8 and 9, at the Palestine Depot. Teenagers are needed to wear bear and elephant costumes. They would be in costume for about 30 minutes, rest and go again. Anyone volunteering would receive a free train pass good for regular runs. Dress code is jeans, comfortable shoes and a nice t-shirt. Civic theatre auditions

Auditions for the Cherokee Civic Theatre’s upcoming production of “The Lost Socks” will be held at 7 p.m. March 3-4 at the theater, 118 W. Fifth St., in Rusk. Parts for adult men and women are available.



Al-Anon meets

Jacksonville Al-Anon Family group meets at 6:30 p.m. every Monday at the First United Methodist Church, on Loop 456 and Corinth Road, in Jacksonville. Use the Adult Sunday school door.





AARP driver’s safety

An AARP Driver Safety Course is scheduled for 1 to 5 p.m. March 3-4 and March 10-11 in Tyler. The course is designed for people 50 years old and older. Membership in the AARP is not required. Jacksonville High School’s Department of Career and Technology Education is asking community members interesting in learning new skills to join the Community Training Night, held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. most Tuesday nights throughout the school year in room 404 of the Career and Technology building on the Jacksonville High School Campus. The next class will be held Tuesday, March 4. Subject of the class will be “Introduction to MS Word.” There is a $5 registration fee for each course. Poll workers needed

Because a record number of voters are expected to turn-out for the March 4 elections, the Cherokee County Democratic Party needs additional poll workers who are available to work on election day. Workers are particularly needed in the more remote areas of the county. Poll workers must be of voting age and must be registered Democrats. Poll workers will be provided with training. Anyone interested should contact Party Chairman Caesar Roy at 903-253-5419 as soon as possible.



To Your Health Luncheon

HOPE Partners in Health is sponsoring its monthly luncheon 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 5, at the HOPE Center, 595 S. Ragsdale. Featured speaker is Glenda Ross, Dental Technician who will discuss dental hygiene. There is no charge for the meal, but reservations must be made by calling 903-586-7781. These special luncheons are held monthly on the first Wednesday of each month, and feature a healthy, nutritious meal and healthcare speaker.



The Voice of Elvis & Legends in concert

Jesse Aron, one of the most sought-after Elvis impersonators in America returns to the Palestine Civic Center during The Voice of Elvis & Legends concert at 7 p.m. March 15. The city of Jacksonville sponsored organization, Keep Jacksonville Beautiful is asking for your help in getting rid of the litter along the streets and roads. Charmers Spring Show

The Jacksonville High School Cherokee Charmers will perform their annual Spring Show “CNN-Charmer Nightly News” at 7 p.m. March 7-8 in the JHS auditorium. Tickets are on sale now. Reserved seats are $7 and will be available for purchase at the JHS auditorium through Feb. 28 and March 4-6 from 3:45 to 5:30 p.m. General admission tickets are $5 and can be purchased at May Drug, Antiqued, and the JHS auditorium. Bath and Beauty sale

The ETMC-Jacksonville Auxiliary is sponsoring a ‘Bath and Beauty’ sale, which has been rescheduled for 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday, March 6 and from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, March 7, in the Grand Lobby of the hospital.



Community Garden

People from around Jacksonville who would like to have their own garden patch are invited to a “Community Garden Party” from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, March 8. This is the second year for the garden. The project began in 2007 with the help of Boy Scout Troop 454, Dejamco and Heath and Heath Hardware. The garden is located at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church at 1023 Corinth Road in Jacksonville. The garden area is divided into ten 4 x 10 foot plots. Depending on how many people wish to participate, more can be added. Gardeners would provide their own gardening tools, seeds or plants and good hard work. Water is provided. All the food grown can be used as the grower wishes. Extra food that is grown can be donated for the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry Gardening is a great way to relieve stress, work outdoors and grow the food you eat. City prayer, fellowship

The city is facing some great challenges with the announced layoff of many of our friends. Join the Jacksonville Ministerial Alliance for a morning of prayer for God’s guidance through these difficult times. All are invited. The event is from 8 to 8:30 a.m. Thursday, March 6, at the Norman Activity Center.



Quilters Guild meet

The Quilters Guild of East Texas will meet at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, March 13, for a social at Pollard United Methodist Church, 3030 New Copeland Road, Tyler. The monthly meeting starts at 10 a.m. An evening meeting will be held at 7 p.m. the same day at the same location. Local quilt shops will preview new products and final preparations for the upcoming quilt show on March 28-29 will be made at both meetings. JC Spanish classes

Beginning Spanish Conversation II will be offered as a continuing education course at Jacksonville College from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday evenings, March 4 through April 8. The course is designed for individuals who want to continue to develop the communication skills they learned in Beginning Spanish Conversation I, or for those who already have an elementary background in Spanish. The textbook used in Spanish Conversation I will also be used for this course. The cost of the course is $75 for individuals who took the first course and already have the textbook, and $95 for everyone else. Students must register and pay for the course by 4:45 p.m. March 4.
