Kiwanis Club of Jacksonville presents donation to HOPE

JACKSONVILLE — Recently, Kiwanis Club of Jacksonville presented a donation of $1,099.00 to Allison Hale, Executive Director, of H.O.P.E., Inc. The donation is to pay for backpacks for seven pre-schoolers.

This donation is the Young Children Priority One project for the local Kiwanis Club for 2013-2014.

Young Children Priority One is an ongoing community service program of Kiwanis International that addresses the needs of children ages 0-5.  All clubs are encouraged to carry out at least two YCPO projects per calendar year – serving children, families and communities.

The H.O.P.E. Backpack Program provides nutritious food to economically disadvantaged elementary school children.  This ensures that they have something to eat over the weekends.

Every Friday, during the school year, participating children receive a backpack with easy-to-prepare items, such as soup, peanut butter, granola bars, fruit juice and shelf-stable milk.  Children then return the empty backpack the next week to be refilled.

The children who receive the backpacks are identified by their teachers, counselors and nurses as returning to school on Mondays showing evidence of being overly hungry.

With this donation, Kiwanis is able to complete their Young Children Priority One project and seven more children can receive backpacks during the school year.

Kiwanis Club of Jacksonville meets every Thursday at Lupe’s Mexican Restaurant at Noon.
