Officials investigate possible improper relationship

RUSK — Officials with the Rusk Independent School District are investigating allegations a teacher engaged in inappropriate electronic discussions with a high school aged student not enrolled in the RISD over mediums such as emails, text messages and social media.

The student in question has never attended Rusk ISD, according to attorney Wayne Haglund of Lufkin, who has represented the district for many years.

"There is nothing saying if the student and the employee in question — I'm not saying if its a 'he' or a 'she' —  have ever even been in the same place at the same time," Haglund said.  "Right now this is nothing but an allegation that is being investigated by district officials. We — as does ever district of which I am aware — have a specific duty to prohibit inappropriate electronic commutation between teachers and students."

Haglund, who said he has represented Rusk ISD for the past 25 to 30 years, declined to name or even provide information that might lead to the identities to the teacher or student. No other information was available.

"We have a legal and ethical duty to protect students and investigate allegations of inappropriate legal conduct to protect and preserve the good name and reputation of our educators," Haglund said.

"Until we have evidence to support the allegations of improper conduct, we will not damage any reputations. We walk an ethical line doing this."
