Jacksonville police file against suspected donut store burglar

CHEROKEE COUNTY —

 Jacksonville police on Wednesday formally filed a charge against an incarcerated former Houston resident suspected of committing the burglary of a local donut shop last month.

Derick Joe Dale Kemp, 40, is alleged to have burglarized the Donut Palace, 1519 S. Jackson St. in Jacksonville, early Sunday, July 21 – stealing its cash register and tip jar in the process. Authorities have filed a burglary a building charge, a state jail felony, against Kemp.

During the burglary, a security camera caught a full view of Kemp's face.

Deputies with the Cherokee County Sheriff's Department additionally allege Kemp burglarized The Corner Store at the intersection of FM-747S and County Road 3119 near Lake Jacksonville this past Saturday.

Bail on the Jacksonville charge probably will be set Thursday, Jacksonville Police Det. Greg Compton said.

“We sent the warrant to the sheriff's department and he (Kemp) probably will see the judge about it down there tomorrow,” the detective said Wednesday.

Kemp is believed to have injured himself during the the Lake Jacksonville burglary. A front door glass of that store apparently was shattered when he ran into it, suffering a cut and leaving blood behind.

Jacksonville Police officers stopped the vehicle that Kemp was driving about 3:30 a.m. Saturday, according to the sheriff's department.

Kemp and his vehicle matched what authorities and the store's owners had observed on yet another videotape taken during the commission of this crime. He also had a cut on his head consistent with the injury the person who robbed the Cherokee County store suffered.

So Kemp was arrested, his vehicle was towed, and he was taken to the Cherokee County Jail where he was interviewed. At that time, Kemp acknowledged breaking in to the corner store but denied committing any other burglaries.

Kemp told police he had moved to Jacksonville from the Houston area about eight days prior.
