CHEROKEE COUNTY —
A one-year-old boy was killed Thursday evening and three others injured when the SUV in which they were traveling ran off U.S. Highway 79 and struck a tree.
This one-vehicle accident, which took place outside Jacksonville city limits, injured the three others, who remained in stable condition at various hospitals Friday, reports show.
Young Alexis Arredondo died during the accident, authorities said.
Meanwhile, driver José Arredondo, 28; Ana Torres, 21; and a 10-month-old girl all were listed in stable condition Friday.
The three initially were taken to East Texas Medical Center-Jacksonville on Thursday, said Trooper Jean Dark, public information officer for the Texas Department of Public Safety – Tyler District.
At least two of the victims had been transferred to other hospitals as of Friday, local authorities said.
The accident took place shortly after 6 p.m. Thursday.
Jacksonville Fire Chief Paul White said it appears that during the accident – which took place at the corner of U.S. 79 and County Road 4209 – the SUV veered off the road, overcorrected and flipped a couple of times before hitting the tree.
“When we got there, we had to extricate them using the Jaws of Life,” the fire chief explained. “We had two ambulances out there. … They ended up flying the young child from Jacksonville to a hospital in Dallas and one of the adults to Tyler.”
Trooper Dark said no other information regarding the accident – including its specific cause or if the driver faces any legal discipline – was immediately available Friday.
Local authorities responded to the accident as quickly as possible Thursday, observed Jacksonville City Manager Mo Raissi.
“It was really bad,” Raissi said Thursday evening.
