'Because of the Brave' among several celebrations recognizing veterans

JACKSONVILLE — Cherokee County veterans will be recognized over the next several days as different organizations host celebrations in their honor.

“Because of the Brave,” a new program coordinated by the Lone Star Military Resource Group, the county Veterans Service Office and area churches, will be held Monday at Central Baptist Church – located at 1909 E. Rusk St. in Jacksonville.

Texas Army National Guard Chaplain Patrick Maae and Sam Hopkins of the U.S. Army Chaplain’s Corps, who served during the Vietnam War era, are guest speakers at the 11 a.m. event.

Other community leaders invited to the event include State Rep. Travis Clardy, State Sen. Robert Nichols, U.S. Congressmen Jeb Hensarling and Louie Gohmert; and Jacksonville Mayor Kenneth Melvin.

Following the event, veterans and their families will be treated to lunch at the church.

Other veterans celebrations slated between now and veterans day include:

• Bullard – The local area Chamber of Commerce will host its annual “Red, White & Blue Festival” today, beginning with 10 a.m. parade. A veteran's ceremony follows at 11 a.m. Also planned are a drumline contest at noon, a 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. car show, and performances – beginning at 2:30 p.m. – by The Magills, Steve Carpenter, Lauren Alexander and Texas Rebellion.

• Bullard – High school students will present a 10 a.m. Veterans Day program at the Audry B. Owens Auditorium on Monday. The Bullard High School Band will perform in concert at the event.

• Rusk High School also plans a special event honoring veterans on Monday, according to schools superintendent Dr. Scott Davis.
