Fund set up for child mauled by dogs

JACKSONVILLE — Local residents are rallying around a three-year-old Jacksonville boy hospitalized Sunday in Dallas after being attacked by family pets.

A benevolent fund has been set up through Austin Bank for the tot, known only as “Baby Konen.”

Donald Hammock, pastor of the Worship Under the Bridge Community – which is spearheading the effort – met young Konen and his family after being called out to the site where the mauling occurred.

“They just need some help – they need our prayers” and financial help, he said. “We have put the word out many times on our Facebook page, asking for prayers, and we've gotten a good response, but when you have a child in that critical of condition, there's going to be expenses.”

According to the Jacksonville Police Department, who responded to a call Sunday evening at a residence in the 1600 block of Meadow Hill, the child was bitten on the throat by at least one of two pet dogs owned by the family.

The attack apparently occurred as the child, accompanied by his family, left through a door. The boy's father was forced to stab one of the animals to force it to release his son from

its grip.

The injured boy was initially transported to East Texas Medical Center-Jacksonville, then taken by helicopter to Children's Medical Center of Dallas.

Meanwhile, the dogs were euthanized by city authorities, with their remains sent to Austin for rabies testing, according to reports.

Hammock said the family – which includes two other children – recently moved to Jacksonville, and the father is still looking for employment.

The unexpected attack on the tot has meant mounting expenses, including travel expenses, in addition to basic living needs.

“Anything we can do to help one of our own in Jacksonville, that what Worship Under the Bridge is about. That is why we have this fund,” he said. “We're going to try to do whatever we can, however needed, because this really just happened so fast.”

According to a post made Tuesday morning on the “Worship Under The Bridge – Jacksonville, Texas” Facebook page, “ Any help that you may be able to give will go a long way! You can send your donation to Austin Bank P.O. Box 951 Jacksonville, TX 75766 or drop off at any location. Please make the check out to Worship Under the Bridge Konen Fund. Thank you and may God bless you and your family!”
