2 new board members, search consideration for new leader on tap

JACKSONVILLE — New Jacksonville ISD board members Cassie DeVillier – the Place 4 trustee – and Al Chavira, the  Place 3 trustee, will be sworn into office after votes are canvassed during a 6:30 p.m. meeting Monday at the JISD Administration Building.

DeVillier and Chavira won their respective races during a May 10 school board election that drew a total of five candidates.

After taking oath, they will help vote on the reorganization of board officers, according to a meeting agenda.

During the meeting, trustees also will consider the hire of TASB Executive Search to conduct a superintendent search for the district. Earlier this week, Dr. Joe Wardell, announced he will be stepping down as JISD superintendent next March.

He will conclude his sixth year as head of the district school system by then, and said in a prepared statement that by announcing his retirement now, he hopes to give trustees time to select his successor.

Other agenda items include:

• Consider and approved engagement of Robinson and Payne as external auditors for the district's 2013-2014 financial audit;

• Consider and approve the purchase of two lots from Austin Bank that are located inside city limits;

• Consider approval for JISD to apply to the Texas Education Agency for expedited waivers for the upcoming school year for three staff development days, two staff development days in subject areas and six early release days;

• Consider approval of consent agendas, including minutes from the April meeting; Investment, finance and ADA Summary reports; and budget amendment #14-06/current amended budget.
