Board renews Bird another year

TROUP — Stuart Bird will continue to serve Troup ISD as the schools superintendent another year, thanks to unanimous support Monday by school board members at their monthly meeting.

“It's a three-year contract that is extended by a year after the first year served,” said Bird, who will receive a five-percent increase over last year for a salary of $120,750.

Bird was a high school principal for 10 years in Carthage before accepting a principal's position in Jacksonville, then hired in 2001 as JISD superintendent, a position he held for seven years before retiring in 2009.

He also was an educational consultant at area schools and briefly taught band at Frankston ISD before working for the Troup district in 2012.

Also during Monday's meeting, the board tabled an agenda item calling for action on the continued operation of the Troup ISD Child Care Center, which the district has operated since 2005.

“It's been a great asset to the community, and we want it to break even, but it's been losing money the last two years,” Bird said. “We tabled the issue because we want to come back with at least two plans for it to break even.”

Presently, 32 children are enrolled in the program, which is licensed through the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services and accepts newborn infants up to preschool age children who turn four by the beginning of September.

“It's been a program that, until the last two years, that has paid its way … it's a good service to the community and it's something we really like to see work,” he said.

Board members also voted to call a Board of Trustee Election on May 10 for full-term Places 1, 2 and 3 on the board.
