3 Alto City Council seats, mayor spot to open

ALTO — A May 10 municipal election has been approved by the local city council, with three council seats and the mayor's position up for grabs.

Council members met in a regular session Monday, said city secretary Cindy Murray. Murray said this past year, when then-Mayor O.T. Allen stepped down from the position, mayor pro tem El Thacker filled the vacancy.

The town's bylaws stipulate that a replacement mayor would be selected from the membership of the city council by the city council; provisions in the bylaws also allow for a mayor to be appointed when no one chooses to run for the position.

“Our mayor pro tem stepped up, but he can only hold the position one year,” Murray said.

Other council positions up for election are those held by Thacker, Randy Selman and Carey Palmer.

Also during the meeting, the council approved a quote for purchase of a 7,488-square-foot portable building that will be set up at one of the city's plant locations to store equipment for the utility department, she said.

In other action, council members deferred a local couple to the Cherokee County Appraisal District after learning that a piece of property they wanted to purchase was not indeed owned by the city.
