Kiwanis Club collects 2,000 pounds of food

Items donated to H.O.P.E.

JACKSONVILLE — Kiwanis members serve their communities all year long. But the excitement for service really builds in April each year when Kiwanis members come together for Kiwanis One Day – a day of community service that is felt around the world.

This year the Kiwanis Club of Jacksonville chose to collect food for H.O.P.E. (Helping Other Pursue Enrichment) as its Kiwanis One Day project.  This also fell during the Feinstein Challenge. The Feinstein Foundation matches food and monetary donations given to non-profits during the months of March and April.

The Kiwanis members set up a table outside of Wal-Mart.  As shoppers approached the store, the Kiwanians would ask people to pick up an extra can or two for HOPE while they were doing their own shopping.  It was a very easy way for people to help H.O.P.E.  Two thousand pounds of food was collected and $200 in cash donations.

Matthew, one of the donors, touched the heart of the Kiwanians.  His mother said that he had money of his own and he was going to buy a game.  But, when he saw the table set up to take food donations, he decided to purchase food with his money.  He stated that someone had helped his grandmother when she needed help.  Matthew decided to pay it forward.

The donations of one and two cans of food added up during the day.  Crystal Bateman reported that it far exceeded any expectations that Kiwanis had going in.   The response from the citizens of Jacksonville was overwhelming.

Allison Hale, Executive Director of H.O.P.E., stated, “I am so grateful to the Kiwanis Club and for the generosity of all of the individuals who gave to the food drive. The donations given during the drive could not have come at a better time. H.O.P.E. assists hundreds of individuals every month and we could never do what we do without the help and support of our local service organizations and the local citizens of this great community. “
