County slates 2 meetings for commissioners

RUSK — Cherokee County Commissioners will meet twice this week in both special and regular sessions at the county courthouse.

On Thursday, they will convene in a 9 a.m. special session to consider adoption of a resolution/order  that takes to the next level a state program that helps counties do necessary road repair through funds raised from special “transportation reinvestment zones.”

In February, commissioners adopted a single, initial County Energy Transportation Reinvestment Zone from five parcels of land on County Road 3110 that had been identified as severely damaged by traffic from overweight vehicles.

In doing so, the county will qualify for CETRZ grant money, allowing precincts to receive funding to address infrastructure problems identified within each. Thursday's session allows the court to begin proceedings and start compiling a priority list of road projects.

On Friday, commissioners will reconvene at 10 a.m. to consider approval of a USDA community facilities grant by the city of Wells, as well as consider approval of a budget amendment regarding an insurance check for the Sheriff's Department, according to a posted agenda.

Other items to be address include:

• Consider laying utility lines in each precinct;

• Consider approval of Sheriff's Department monthly report; and

• Consider approval of consent agenda items, including Commissioners' Court meeting minutes,; authorizing payment of bills, payroll and transer of funds; and monthly reports from the county auditor, county treasurer and the Pct. 4 Constable's office.

The meeting – which is a regular session of the court – was moved to Friday from its usual second Monday date due to court members attending a seminar for Galveston.
