Patsy Dawson, with grandchildren Gracie, 7, and Von Dawson, 8, present World War II veteran Oscar Smith with a patriotic ribbon and a cake (to share with friends) Thursday at Angelina House.
This is the fifth summer Dawson and her grandchildren have done patriotic acts of service around the city.
“We just want to thank the veterans for what they do, whether retired or active,” Dawson said. “I want to teach my grandchildren patriotism.”
The three perform their acts of kindness in honor of the children’s great-great grandfather, Hayden Brown, and in memory of Patsy’s father.
“I was just doing my duty,” Smith said of his service in World War II. “I was trying to make this country a better place for my kids to live in.”
Gracie and Von are the children of Von and Natalie Dawson of Jacksonville and students at The Brook Hill School.
