Former employees of Lon Morris College plan to gather Saturday to discuss ways to recover their back wages from the LMC bankruptcy estate.
In attendance — although not in any official capacity — will be Jacksonville City Attorney Joe Angle.
“I'm just going as a concerned citizen,” Angle explained Wednesday. “They asked me to come. No one is paying me anything. I'm just going,”
Jacksonville City Manager Mo Raissi also emphasized Angle will not be representing the city at that meeting.
Dawn Ragan, Plan Agent for the LMC bankruptcy estate, did not return a message asking when the employees would be paid.
However, in a separate email she did specify how former Lon Morris College students can recover their transcripts from the dissolved institution.
Those wishing copies of their transcripts can access the website “http://www.beabearcat.com,” Ragan stated in an email. There is a Paypal button in place that facilitate the recovery of a particular transcript.
The LMC bankruptcy estate issue came to a head in mid-February when a federal judge approved a formal liquidation plan.
However, nothing was included in any official paperwork that addressed the payment of the employees, who have not yet been reimbursed for their final time on the job.
Ragan and Houston attorney Hugh Ray III told reporters at the time that agreements had been reached with several Methodist foundations to help. These talks were anticipated to result in all owed money being paid to the former employees, they said,
That was months ago. As of Wednesday, the employees remained unpaid.
Thomas Kelley, spokesman for Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, said Dawn Ragan remains the sole party responsible for employee reimbursement.
“I'm hearing from our bankruptcy attorneys that Ms. Ragan is the person who has that authority — not our office,” Kelley said Wednesday.
An LMC employee declined comment about the meeting. The employee meeting, meanwhile, takes place at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, Angle confirmed.
