CHEROKEE COUNTY – A Lake Jacksonville-area woman who shot herself in the chest – possibly by accident while cleaning her weapon earlier this week – remained in medical custody late Thursday afternoon.
The incident happened Wednesday evening, prompting authorities to take the 59-year-old woman to East Texas Medical Center in Tyler by helicopter, according to a statement Cherokee County Sheriff's Department Capt. John Raffield gave area media.
The written statement by Raffield indicates authorities came to the scene after the woman called a dispatcher about the incident around 9 p.m.
The dispatcher stayed with the woman on the phone until authorities were able to force their way into her residence, reports show.
The woman was found with a single gunshot wound to her upper right chest, near her shoulder; reports show she lost a lot of blood.
A high-point, 9mm semi-automatic pistol was discovered at the scene by authorities.
The woman was last listed in stable condition at the Tyler hospital, according to reports.
The incident remains under investigation by the Cherokee County Sheriff's Department.
