Troup receives high ranking

TROUP — Troup has been named as one of only eleven cities in the State of Texas to receive the Texas Comptroller's highest recognition for financial transparency, its Platinum Leadership Circle Award. In addition to the eleven cities, the Platinum designation was awarded to twenty five other governmental agencies, including Smith County.

There are four possible recognition levels awarded by the Texas Comptroller, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum based on an agency’s compliance with the Comptroller's standards of transparency. Troup was the smallest city to be so honored. In the Texas Comptroller's scoring system, Troup scored 22 of a possible 22 points.

To keep its designation, Troup must resubmit an application annually. To receive the Platinum designation, the city must, among other things, have its budgets, its check registers, its auditor's annual reports, official's contact information and other requirements posted online for simple and easy access by the public.

“Making the decision to take the necessary steps to become as financially transparent as possible was an easy one for our council and staff," Mayor John Whitsell said.  "I am honored that the State Comptroller's office has announced the City of Troup as a member of the very first Platinum Leadership Circle. I would like to commend our council and staff for making this very important commitment.”
