A Cherokee County woman is charged with first-degree murder after her husband was found with a fatal gunshot wound Wednesday afternoon, officials said.
Rebecca Barker, 52, was arraigned Thursday, and bond was set at $500,000 by Judge Brenda Dominy of Precinct 1.
The shooting occurred about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 9000 block of US Hwy. 84 West in Rusk.
According to a press release, a woman identified as "Rebecca" said she had shot her husband.
When officers arrived at the couple's residence, they found a deceased man sitting in a chair in the living room.
The caller was identified as Rebecca Barker.
Barker's husband, 76-year-old Jerry Barker,
suffered a single fatal gunshot wound, the release said.
Barker was transported to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office. She was subsequently charged with murder.
On Thursday, Jerry Barker's sons expressed concerns about the relationship to other media sources.
Rebecca Barker reportedly told Cherokee County officials that her husband had verbally abused her, according to media sources.
Liberty County jail records show that Barker was previously arrested for the attempted murder of a former husband in 1996.
Efforts to confirm Rebecca Barker's previous criminal records were unanswered as of press time.
