UPDATED: Train, car collide in Troup, woman in critical condition

TROUP — 4:24 p.m. -

Tyler resident Cynthia Strandberg is in critical condition tonight in the intensive care unit of ETMC-Tyler after the car she was driving was struck by a train Friday afternoon, according to ETMC spokeswoman Rebecca Berkley.

A Union Pacific train, 5,820 feet long, was traveling about 35-40 mph through Troup at around 12:45 p.m. Friday when it saw the 2010 Ford Edge, driven by Strandberg, on the tracks. The train attempted to slow down, said Texas DPS Trooper Jean Dark, but was unable to come to a complete stop and struck the vehicle on the passenger side, dragging it approximately 1/2 mile before it came to rest on the tracks.

The accident occurred at the Bryant Street crossing, Trooper Dark said. It appeared Strandberg was trying to cross the tracks in reverse when the incident occurred, according to Trooper Dark.

Strandberg was alone in the vehicle and taken by helicopter to ETMC.

The Texas Department of Public Safety and railroad workers were investigating the incident.
