Locals team up to clean up parks

JACKSONVILLE — A group calling themselves the Jville Volunteers are working to make the city's parks a little more appealing.

Recently the group tackled a park located behind the Stacy Hunter Rec Center, removing graffiti and mold, as well as painting the merry-go-round, picking up trash and beautifying the overall look of the park.

“JVille Volunteers has a mission to create a ever-growing database of volunteers to work alongside city officials to restore and adopt areas of town to keep the town maintained and preserved for future generations,” said organizer Whitney Graham Carter.

The group encourages local businesses, churches and residents to become more involved with the community by helping with projects like the park cleanups.

Austin Bank employees joined the effort at the Rec Center park, including bank president Nathan Jones.

Jones said efforts to clean up the park show that the group cares about the city of Jacksonville by providing a safer, cleaner environment for area children to play.

“It is important for parents and children to visit the local parks and enjoy themselves without the trash and graffiti. Austin Bank is proud to partner with the City of Jacksonville and we look forward to helping out with the next service project to improve our community,” he said.

Some of the  organizers involved with the volunteer group include Cassie Devillier, Vicki Houser, Juliana Swanson Peacock, Jessica Murdock Chambless and Debbie Kerzee.

"We are very thankful that Austin Bank stepped up to the task and we look forward to finding a group that would like to adopt this lovely park," Carter said.

Carter added that the city is also working on some park equipment repairs, moving a dumpster, removing old wood and adding new gravel. She said the next park up for renovations is Love Park north of Kickapoo Street.

Jones challenged other Jacksonville businesses to join the efforts to clean up the city's parks.
