Officials: City swimming pools preparing to open for summer

CHEROKEE COUNTY — Hot days, cool water.

Yes, public swimming pool season is about to begin in Jacksonville.

City officials said the pool at Buckner Park will open Saturday, June 7, with swimming lessons to be offered again by the Tyler YMCA. The organization also supplies life guards during swim season, which lasts through the start of the local school year.

In past years, the Tyler Y has offered 50-minute classes for different age groups during the early part of summer.

A YMCA employee said the schedule for the Jacksonville pool has not yet been set, but individuals wanting more information may call the Tyler YMCA at 903-593-7327.

The Rusk City pool, located on Euclid Street, is closed for maintenance this summer, according to a city employee.

Repairs on the pool –  constructed in the 1950's by the local Lions Club on property donated by them to the city – have already begun and are expected to conclude in late summer. However, when it re-opens next year, it will include a brand-new splash pad, the employee said.

The City of Palestine is offering residents free passes to the city swimming pool located at Steven Bennett Park, next to the Palestine YMCA on North Loop 256, according to a release from the Palestine Parks and Recreation Department.

Passes are available at the city water department; residents are asked to bring a driver's license and a copy of a current water bill to establish residency. Non-residents may purchase a $60 family pass for up to four people. Daily non-resident passes are $5 per person, the release states.

A splash park located in Palestine's Reagan Park is free of charge.

Hours are posted at www.cityofpalestinetx.com, as is a list of the different offerings, ranging from swim lessons and swim team to day camp, lap/public swim and water aerobics.
