Cuney Council cancels meeting, again

CUNEY — Tuesday's Cuney City Council meeting – in which local alderman were to vote on canceling a May 10 election due to unopposed status of candidates – was canceled because of a lack of quorum, according to City Secretary Brenda Lankford.

“There was no quorum, Ms. (Grace) Beal was not here,” Lankford said, adding that no date has been set for an upcoming meeting to address the issue, which focuses on council places 2, 4 and 6, which are up for election.

Places 2 and 4 attracted no candidates, according to Lankford. Place 6, which doubles as the mayor's position, drew a single candidate: Mayor Pro Tem Charles Cross.

City officials may find themselves up against the clock in their attempt to cancel the election, as early voting begins April 28 and runs through May 6.

While “legally, there's no formal deadline to cancel an election, for practical purposes, it should be done before early voting begins and mail-out ballots go out,” Texas Secretary of State spokeswoman Alicia Pierce pointed out.

Beal said she had stopped by city hall about an hour prior to the 10 a.m. meeting time to leave information for Mayor Oscar Birdow, but left to take care of personal business in the interim.

“It took longer than anticipated,” and she was unable to get to the meeting on time, she said.

An April 8 council meeting to discuss the same topic also was canceled due to lack of a quorum.

“I really would like to see this worked out (because it addresses) the voting rights of the city,” Beal said.

She has raised concerns about cancelation of the May election after learning that her name was not listed among those vying for the Place 6 council seat.

Beal filed an application Feb. 28, the deadline for filing; according to state election law, candidates gave until 5 p.m. of the final filing day to submit applications.

During Tuesday's meeting, city leaders also were to discuss repair of County Roads 3501 and 3526 inside city limits.
