RUSK — Sacred Heart of Jesus’ parishioners gathered for a Prayer Vigil for Life this past Sunday night, marking the anniversary of Roe V. Wade, the Supreme Court case which legalized abortion.

“We gathered to pray for life and for countless babies killed by abortion,” said Fr. Stephen Duyka, priest of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church of Rusk. “The passing of Roe V. Wade continues to be a scourge on our nation, where the rights of women were deemed more important than the laws of God.”

Sacred Heart’s youth group joined Catholics around the nation, standing in solidarity for life for approximately 40 million abortions that have been performed. The youth, remembering the unborn children, said individual prayers and devotions during the week leading up to Respect Life Sunday on Jan. 22.

Following the Prayer Vigil for Life on Sunday evening, parishioners gathered together and placed white crosses in a “Cemetery of the Innocents” near the statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in front of the church. Fr. Stephen led the parishioners in prayer at the statue and the “Cemetery of the Innocents,” where the white crosses represent each child lost in the nearly 40 million abortions that have been performed.

“We continue to pray for the reversal of Roe. V. Wade to protect the unborn and to defend the defenseless,” Fr. Stephen said.
