A Jacksonville woman attempting to make a U-turn in her vehicle along U.S. Highway 79 East was fatally struck during a two-vehicle wreck Friday afternoon.
According to Jacksonville Police Lieutenant Chase Berryhill, Dovie Bennett, 94, was pronounced dead at the scene by Cherokee County Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Judge Rodney Wallace.
Emergency personnel received a call of a major crash in the 2600 block of U.S. 79 East about 1:30 p.m., and traffic was blocked in both directions for about a two-hour period, he said.
According to a preliminary investigation report, Bennett – who was driving a 2005 Ford Taurus – was traveling east along the highway, as was an 18-wheel tractor-trailer from a Paris-based company.
Witnesses told police that Bennett “pulled to the shoulder (in her vehicle) and tried to make a U-turn” when the wreck occurred near Cherokee Ranch Golf Club, Berryhill said.
No other injuries reported. Along with police and DPS, Jacksonville Fire & EMS responded to the scene.
The investigation is ongoing.
