CHEROKEE COUNTY – Two Rusk men were arrested late this week on charges of capital murder in connection with the shooting death of an 18-year-old Cherokee County man.

According to Sheriff James Campbell, Cody Roberts, 17, and Jontae Johnson, 20, are in Cherokee County Jail on $1 million bonds each, with Johnson also arrested on a $2,500 bond for aggravated assault, based on a warrant issued by the City of Rusk.

The men were both arraigned by 369th Judicial District Judge Michael Davis.

Johnson was arrested Thursday evening, when “he came in to talk to us,” the sheriff said. “Roberts was picked up for questioning and brought in late Wednesday afternoon, and was arrested in our office.”

Campbell said that the sheriff's department received a call at 8:09 a.m. Wednesday from a residence on FM 2117 in the Maydelle community of shots fired and somebody shot.

“When we got there, we had to clear the house, and we found (Trevor) Lawson in the house, deceased,” he said.

Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Judge Tony Johnson performed the inquest at the scene, where Lawson, 18, of Maydelle, was pronounced dead, the sheriff said.

Campbell said that the shooting took place next door to where Lawson lived.

Lawson's body was sent to Southeast Forensic in Tyler for autopsy.

Meanwhile, sheriff's officials continue to investigate what took place, Campbell said, declining to discuss the case in further detail.

“We are still collecting evidence and talking to people. But we ask people to please contact the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office at 903-683-2271 if they have any information related to the case,” he said.
