Area residents are under a winter weather warning through 9 a.m. Saturday, and should expect to see a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain, according to an advisory issued late Friday by the National Weather Service in Shreveport.

The advisory is for East Texas – including Cherokee and surrounding counties – along with northern Louisiana and southwestern Arkansas, according to www.weather.gov.

Accumulation of up to half an inch of snow/sleet is expected, while less than a tenth of an inch of ice accumulation is predicted. This precipitation, however, will impact elevated surfaces such as bridges and overpasses, causing them to become slick, the site noted.

“A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities and use caution while

driving,” the site stated.

Additional rain is predicted late Saturday night through Tuesday as a series of upper level disturbances interact with a stalled frontal boundary across the area. “Brief periods of locally heavy rainfall may lead to localized flooding. However, no additional wintry precipitation is expected at this time,” it added.
