Jacksonville: Interim police chief announced

Mike Alexander

Jacksonville City Manager Greg Smith announced an interim police chief Tuesday after a closed session at the city council meeting.

Mike Alexander, who retired from Austin Police Department in 2009 and later served as the interim police chief and city manager in Palestine, was announced to fill the vacancy.

Alexander will begin his interim position on or about Oct. 1, according to Smith.

The announcement was made about 7:10 p.m. Tuesday after a full slate of council business during the regular September council meeting.

Jacksonville Police Chief Andrew Hawkes recently resigned to take a position with the Sunnyvale Police Department near Mesquite. Hawkes was honored during the meeting Tuesday.

Council members returned to a closed executive session after the announcement.
