A Jacksonville man attempting to cross the highway in Alvarado on Wednesday was fatally struck by a passing vehicle.
Alvarado Police Chief Brad Anderson said the man — who was identified by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner as Artemio Luna Tavera, 56 — was working as a subcontractor to mow and trim the medians of the 5400 block of Interstate 35W.
“He was trimming the median and began to cross the highway,” Anderson said. “An F250 was traveling northbound in the lefthand lane and when he came up the hill the gentleman was in the street. The driver locked his breaks and attempted to stop, but ended up hitting him.”
Rescue workers responded to the scene at about 3:20 p.m. where he was pronounced dead.
In the past 12 months, three pedestrians have died while attempting to cross 1-35W in Johnson County, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner.
One death occurred in Burleson and two were in Alvarado.
“This area [in Alvarado] there has always been some issues because of the design of the road,” Anderson said. “It is on [the Texas Department of Transportation’s] radar to fix. Within the next couple of years, construction will be underway and hopefully, there is some relief in sight.”
