FLINT – Two people died Wednesday night after a vehicle in which they were traveling was hit head- on by a pickup traveling along FM 2493 in southern Smith County.
Dana Michelle Regester, 41, of Flint, was pronounced dead at the scene just after 6 p.m. by Smith County Pct. 2 Justice of the Peace Gary Alfred, while her passenger, 18-year-old Pasha Zapolskyy, a foreign exchange student, was pronounced dead by an East Texas Medical Center doctor in Tyler about 8:30 p.m., said a DPS dispatcher from Smith County.
DPS Trooper Ryan Thompson was the reporting officer, she said.
According to the trooper's report, the incident occurred just before 6 p.m. Wednesday on FM 2493, 4.2 miles north of Bullard. Conditions were rainy and wet at the time, the report noted.
Regester was driving a 2013 Chevy Traverse, traveling north along the FM road with passengers that included Zapolskyy, a 17-year-old male believed to be from Bullard and Regester's 15-year-old daughter.
A 2002 Dodge Ram pickup driven by Carl Wayne Crabtree, 30, of Bullard, was traveling south along FM 2493 when it entered the wrong side of the roadway, striking the SUV, according to the report.
Crabtree, who reported injuries, was taken by ambulance to Trinity Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler.
All individuals, except for the 15-year-old female, were wearing seat belts, according to the report.
According to an official with The Brook Hill School, Zapolskyy and Dana Regester are a part of The Brook Hill School community in Bullard. On the school's website, Regester is listed as the associate director of special events.
