Salas said his mission was to “win the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people.”

Salas teamed with his school, Manhattanville College, to form the “adopt-a-soldier” program.

By enrolling at mysoldier.com, individuals will receive a My Soldier Starter Kit online, which includes contact information for a soldier as well as letter writing guidelines from Salas. Participants, once enrolled, can send for a free red “My Soldier” rubber bracelet to publicly show support for U.S. troops.

A $10 donation is requested from those who can afford it, and all donations are applied to the program’s operating costs.

Those wishing to participate in “I Heart My Soldier” must contact Program Coordinator Mike Seminara before Jan. 23 at 914-323-5439 or via e-mail to seminaram@mville.edu.

To participate individually or with your family, sign up online at www.mysoldier.com, or write to Manhattanville College My Soldier Department, 2900 Purchase St., Purchase NY 10577.

For those who want to show support but can’t make a commitment to an ongoing pen pal relationship, the program offers “I Heart My Soldier,” designed to gather heartfelt wishes from individuals to send to soldiers for Valentine’s Day.
