Alto High School Principal Charles Weeks’ contract was not renewed during the executive session portion of the Alto Independent School Board meeting Monday night, according to Superintendent Lawayne Sheffield.

“All of our administration contracts were extended by one year except for one,” Sheffield said. “Charles Weeks has been terminated and will be leaving at the end of June.”

Sheffield declined to release the reason for Weeks’ termination.

Weeks was hired on July 25 to serve a one-year contract as high school principal after Sheffield, who was serving as principal and superintendent, became too busy for both positions.

With the termination of Weeks comes questions of Sheffield’s status, especially since a special Alto ISD executive meeting was held Wednesday night to discuss applicants for superintendent.

“They met to discuss applicants,” Sheffield said.

According to Sheffield, he does not know the details of the closed session. Calls to two other school board members were not immediately returned.

School board members also hired Birda Parker to serve as the high school counselor part time until the end of the school year, and a maintenance position was approved, Sheffield said.

Other agenda items approved Monday night included:

• accounts payable for January and February 2006;

• changing the next school board meeting to March 27;

• selecting Bob Williams as election judge for the May 13 election;

• an emergency operations plan, mandated by the state;

• purchasing a computer;

• updating 77 amendments;

• approving a start of school waiver; and

• budget amendments.
