ALTO — The Alto Independent School District School Board met Monday night and discussed hiring a new high school counselor for the upcoming year. The board decided to hire Barbara Brown to be the new high school counselor.

Brown comes to Alto from Groveton, Texas, where she has been serving as both the secondary and elementary school counselors. Brown has worked for the Groveton Independent School District for the past 15 years.

“We are very excited about her joining us,” Ray Despain, Alto superintendent, said. “Her wealth of knowledge will be a welcome addition to our staff.”

Brown has been hired on a one year probationary contract, as is normal of new hires. After successful completion of her first year, Alto ISD may choose to extend her contract for several more years.

“I am excited about being here. They (Alto ISD) have been without a counselor for a while, so I’m glad to pitch in and get things ready for next year,” Brown said. “I just hope I can contribute positively to a successful school year.”

The board regularly meets every third Monday of the month at the office of the superintendent. Each meeting is open to the public and includes time for citizen comments.
