As of press time, 11-year-old Anthony Anderson Jr. of Jacksonville remained in critical condition in a Dallas hospital after being struck by a car on O’Keefe Road in Jacksonville, Saturday.

Pastor of Afton Grove Baptist Church, David Hallum, 50, of Jacksonville, was driving a 1999 Toyota Camry in the 1200 block of O’Keefe, when Anthony came down a private drive on a friend’s bicycle. According to Anthony’s family, Anthony was at a swimming party at Buckner Park, and left briefly to ride a friend’s bike, which he did not realize had no brakes. The bicycle collided with the front of the vehicle, severely injuring Anthony.

Police reports indicate the boy was taken by ambulance to East Texas Medical Center-Jacksonville, and flown to a Dallas hospital for further treatment the same day.

Family said Anthony’s injuries include a severe skull fracture, brain injury, a hematoma on his adrenaline gland, both femurs fractured, vascular injuries that required surgery, a collapsed right lung, and facial fractures.

As of press time, Anthony remained in an induced comatose state on a breathing machine, and the extent of his brain trauma was unknown.

“We asked the doctors if his life was saved, and they said it is not,” said Anthony’s mother.

“We just ask for everyone to keep him in their prayers.”

Acting Jacksonville Police Department Chief John Page said it appeared the brake failure was cause of the accident, and the incident is currently being investigated. Page added no citations will be issued against the driver or the juvenile’s guardians.

“It was a tragic accident,” Page said.

The boy was not wearing a helmet according to the police report.
