A new dress code for Jacksonville ISD students is among 18 items on the agenda for the district’s school board meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday. The board meeting will be held at the middle school theater, 1541 Pine St.

If approved, the dress code will be effective for the 2007-08 school year. A dress code advisory committee comprised of school officials, parents and students put the proposed dress code together earlier this month.

Permissable clothing includes short and long-sleeved polo and knit shirts in any solid color, with no logos or pictures. Items impacting appearance, such as acceptable hair length for male students, are also addressed in the proposed code.

Some parents have voiced their concerns about the proposed dress code by writing letters to the Jacksonville Daily Progress. Concerns include the cost of complying, the availability of hundreds of Oxford and polo-style shirts in Jacksonville and the difficulty of washing and pressing khaki slacks. One writer parents described the dress code as “uniforms in disguise.”

Should the proposed dress code not be adopted, the committee will go back to work on another proposal to present to the board, said Dr. Leslie Brinkman George, dress code advisory committee facilitator.

A school board candidate drawing for open positions on the ballot is also on the agenda.

Vying for Place 1 on the school board are Robert Douglas and Jim Tarrant Jr., while Pat McCown and Kenneth Smith are both seeking votes for Place 2.

Other items include:

• a discussion about JISD facilities;

• first TAKS testing of third and fifth grade reading results

• business reports;

• JISD annual transportation report;

• considering bids for a warehouse addition proposal;

• approving a time and date for the April board meeting;

• the superintendent’s report; and

• discussing information items for future agendas.

Board members will also meet in executive session at the end of the meeting to discuss legal matters, student discipline and consider the hiring, possible reassignment, termination and resignation of personnel.

The JISD Board of Trustees regularly meets at 6:30 p.m., the third Monday of the month at the JISD administration building.
