The body of Charles Williams, 40, of Tyler, was found at approximately 1 p.m. Thursday in Lake Palestine by officials who had been searching for the man since he was last seen struggling in the water on Wednesday.

Williams is the fifth person from Smith County, and the third person on Lake Palestine, to drown this year.

Smith County Game Warden Leanne Winkenwerder said Williams was out on the lake with friends, and jumped into the water from a boat to go swimming. When Williams bobbed under water, his friends first thought he was joking.

“Once they realized he was going under, they tried to help him,” she said. “When they were unsuccessful, they called the proper authorities.”

Officials recovered Williams’ body near Lakeway Harbor — the same area in which 9-year-old Cade Castleberry drowned in in January.
