A two-vehicle accident claimed the lives of two Jacksonville men last week in Rusk County, investigators have confirmed.

Police reports show officers were called to the scene of the accident at 5:48 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, on U.S. Highway 79 South, 13 miles outside of Henderson city limits.

Ronald Gary Smith, 30, of Jacksonville was driving a 1992 Ford Taurus in the southbound lane of traffic on Highway 79, while Salomon Ramos, 31, of Jacksonville, was driving a 1997 black-and-gray Dodge Ram truck and traveling north.

According to an eyewitness account, Smith’s vehicle crossed the center stripe and struck the 1997 Dodge Ram pickup head-on.

Texas Department of Public Safety Cpl. Jesse Stewart said, “The eyewitness told officers that Smith’s vehicle crossed into the other lane very abruptly, indicating there was no time for Mr. Ramos to avoid the collision.”

Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. Reports indicated there were no other injuries or vehicles involved in the accident.
