Two men were arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated assault each in connection to a fight on Tyler Street, which occurred Saturday, Jan. 14.

Abdon Mendez was arrested Friday, and Sergio Galvan was arrested Saturday by officers with the Jacksonville Police Department, according to JPD officials. Bond was set at $25,000 for each count.

The altercation occurred about 9 p.m., Jan. 14, when JPD officers were dispatched to the 900 block of Tyler Street in reference to shots fired. Officers discovered that a 39-year-old woman had been shot in the leg while attempting to break up a fight.

According to witnesses, several Hispanic men had gotten into an argument, and a fight occurred between two of them. One of the men brought a shot gun to the fight, and two shots were fired.

The man with the shotgun was chased and hit with his own gun at least once, according to officials, but the suspects had fled the scene when officers arrived.

The woman was transported to East Texas Medical Center-Jacksonville for treatment.

JPD Officers also recently arrested a man for injury to an elderly person. While serving a warrant for injury to the elderly on Friday to James Hassell for assaulting an elderly man in 2004, officers discovered that Hassell was not meeting the nutritional needs of an elderly woman whom he was caring for, and an arrest was made.
