Morgan Shreve, a 5th grader at Nichols Intermediate School, has been named a winner in the 2006 Arbor Day poster contest.

She is the regional winner of the Piney Woods Division, and was one of only five finalists in the state. Her art work will be displayed at the state capital the week of April 24-28 for Arbor Day celebrations.

John Boyette of the Texas Forest Service presented Morgan with a certificate and several prizes during a presentation on April 21. The Jacksonville Garden Club helped in planting a 15-gallon cypress tree on campus as part of the awards won from the contest.

Morgan is the daughter of Deborah and Larry Shreve. Her science teacher is Mrs. Slovacek.

According to the official Web site, “National Arbor Day is the last Friday in April, but many states observe Arbor Day on different dates according to their best tree-planting times.”

In Texas, Arbor Day is celebrated the last Friday in April. The state tree is the pecan tree.
