CHEROKEE COUNTY – A search along the Neches River continues for a 49-year-old Wells man who was reported missing Monday evening to the Houston County Sheriff's Office.
Danny Wayne Carter “was going to go hog hunting, and was on the Cherokee County side of the camp when he went across the Neches River in a boat,” said Cherokee County Sheriff James Campbell. “He hadn't been seen since.”
Cherokee officials joined the search search for Carter, owner of Danny W. Carter Insurance in Wells, Tuesday morning. The search team also includes the Texas Parks and Wildlife, which is using sonar to sweep the river; the Texas Department of Public Safety, searching by helicopter; and the HCSO, performing a search on horseback, Campbell said.
“That's all we know right now,” he said, adding that Carter – whom he described as a skilled woodsman – was dressed in camouflage.
“The family is anxious to hear from him … we're not sure if he was hurt or if he walked out” of an area located off Texas Highway 21 at the river, Campbell said.
The public is asked to contact either the Houston County Sheriff's Office, 936-544-2862, or Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, 903-683-2271, if Carter has been sighted since Monday.
