A sign lets voters know where they can vote Tuesday at the Jacksonville Public Library.

RUSK – Three dozen amendments to the Rusk City Charter, voted upon Tuesday with at least 69 percent or more support, will be become effective once canvassed by the Cherokee County Commissioners Court.

“We contracted with the county for the election, so they will do the canvassing,” explained City Manager Jim Dunaway, who added that the issue will be on the Nov. 14 city meeting agenda “to do whatever action necessary after the canvass.”

Once changes are reflected in the updated document, “these will say 'Amended 11-5-2019,” he said.

Council members “are pleased that the amendments passed,” having put work into “an extensive process with the Charter Committee and with some minor discussion,” Dunaway said.

According to complete, but unofficial, results posted Tuesday night by The Cherokee County Election Department, Proposition H – which requires the City Council to order and hold all elections and canvass the returns while governed by the general laws of the State of Texas relating to and regarding elections of municipal officers in the cities of its class in organization – drew the highest number of supporters, at 90.23 percent of the total 256 ballots were cast by absentee, early and election day vote. The proposal passed 231 for, 25 against, according to www.co.cherokee.tx.us.
