TYLER — The Jacksonville Fightin’ Indian tennis team faced some of its toughest competition of the spring season in the Tyler Lee Varsity Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

Several of the top teams from the Metroplex participated in the two-day event as well as a few of the usual East Texas powers.

Highlighting play for the Tribe was Mercer Day, who captured fourth place in boy’s singles.

Day defeated players from DeSoto and Tyler Lee in the early rounds before losing to Kevin Butkus of Dallas Jesuit (2-6, 4-6) in the semi-finals.

Day, a senior, then dropped a  hard-fought three set match to Weldon Murry of Texas High (6-4, 1-6, 1-6).

Jacksonville will try to bounce back this weekend at the Corsicana Tournament.
