Dr. Ona C. Miller recently spoke at the sixty-third session of the United Nations’ Commission on the Status of Women. The Session was held March 11-19, 2019 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, New York. The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. Over 9000 registered representatives from over 1030 civil society organizations, including representatives of member States and UN entities from all regions of the world attended the session.
Dr. Miller spoke on Civility in Women Leadership, which exemplifies honor and respect for self and other women in leadership. Civility is reaching out to the next generation as mentors and coaches through education, training, and development. Additionally, Dr. Miller emphasized the importance of women leaders remaining teachable and expanding their scope of influence to build bridges for future women leaders. Two major themes impacting women world-wide are: (1) Women Empowerment and the link to sustainable development; and (2) Social protection systems, access to public services, sustainable infrastructure for gender equality, and the empowerment of women and girls. Dr. Miller recalls, that as a young girl and young adult, her experiences during holidays and annual summer visits to her grandparents’ farm were invaluable and empowering. “My grandparents were mentors and coaches for me. Lessons learned and knowledge given has kept me grounded with an unwavering foundation”.
