Thursday was the last day for the House of Representatives to consider pieces of legislation by House authors. As the clock was winding down, House Bill 3074, pro-life legislation which reforms the Texas Advance Directives Act and advances attempts to maintain the life of an unborn child, passed overwhelmingly. The bill was carefully negotiated by several of my colleagues and has the support of Texas Right to Life, as well as Texas Alliance for Life. Other pro-life legislation included HB 3994, which strengthens Texas' judicial bypass system by making improvements necessary to protect the original intent of the landmark 1999 legislation.

Also this week, several of my bills were considered in Senate committees and voted out to be considered by the entire body. Among these bills was HB 3062 which helps Texas high schools obtain grants to help fund projects that will advance career and technical education. Also House Bill 833, a bill to help local business in East Texas passed out of its Senate committee.

Congratulations to the 2015 Leadership Henderson graduating class! District Director Jerri Jones enjoyed visiting with Henderson civic and business leaders at the graduation dinner at Durango's Canyon in Mt. Enterprise. Additionally, I was proud to have Lt. Jimmy Jackson with the Department of Public Safety (DPS) visit Nacogdoches to speak to the Nacogdoches County Republican Women on Operation Strong Safety and DPS efforts to secure the Texas border.

As the session continues, House bills will be heard in the Senate and I look forward to my pieces of Legislation passing that chamber before heading to the desk of the Governor. Along with my legislation, both chambers will continue to debate important issues such as tax cuts, the state budget and tuition revenue bonds, which will provide state universities with the resources to improve facilities on their campuses.

Finally, I'd like to again remind everyone that we are still accepting applications for the Texas Armed Services Scholarship Program. If you know of a high school student from House District 11 who excels academically, is interested in joining ROTC in college and eventually joining the military after graduation, please contact our district office.

Quote of the Week

"You'll come to learn that who you are is more important than what you have—and that you have responsibilities to your fellow citizens, your country, and your family. By taking part in American democracy, you will make our country stronger."
