LUFKIN — Previously undefeated Alto was upset, 25-21, by Joaquin in a Class 2A, Division I, Region III Area match up that was played at Abe Martin Stadium on the Lufkin High School campus Friday night.
The Yellowjackets (11-1) led 14-8 at intermission, but the Rams (10-2) battled back in the second half to outscore the Jackets 17-7 to notch the victory in what was a highly physical affair between the two powers.
Joaquin will take on Groveton, who knocked off Big Sandy, 55-27, on Friday, in a regional quarterfinal game late next week.
The Jackets, who came into the battle allowing opponents only 7.8 points per game on average, enjoyed their largest lead of the night, 21-11, before the Rams stormed back to score 14-unanswered points in the final 9:00 to grind out the triumph.
A 3-yard scamper by Lorenzo Lane Jr. proved to be the winning score for Joaquin.
