BULLARD — Bullard High School's Mikah Hughes proved to be the quintessential student-athlete — with a strong emphasis on student — this week when he announced via his Twitter account that he has verbally committed to Harvard University of the Ivy League.
Verbal pledges are non-binding. Written commitments cannot be made before Feb. 3, 2016.
Hughes had received offers from Yale University, Liberty University and Bucknell University, also NCAA Division I schools.
The highly-decorated outside linebacker stands 6-foot-1 and tips the scales at 210 pounds.
During his junior season in 2014, Hughes piled up 71 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, four quarterback sacks, five forced fumbles, four pass break ups and a pair of fumble recoveries.
He is the lynchpin of head coach Shannon Wilson's Panther defense.
The Crimson went undefeated (10-0) last season, which included a 31-24 triumph over rival Yale in “The Game”, a season-ending tradition for Harvard football.
Harvard is coached by Tim Murphy.
