BULLARD – A season opener that featured two of East Texas top quarterbacks, it took a while to get started, but once it did neither surprised the vocal crowd on hand at Panther stadium.
A one-hour game delay cooled off the field, and paved the way for an offensive showdown that resulted in Pine Tree claiming a 47-30 win over Bullard.
Pirate quarterback, D.J Freeman was on a mission and a hard man to tackle in the season opener, throwing for 180 yards and three scores, while adding another 125 yards on the ground and two touchdowns in the win.
After great field position after the kickoff, the Pirates capped off their first drive of the year with a three-yard blast from Jayden Smith. The score set up by a 19-yard first down run from Freeman in a four-play drive.
While it took the Panther offense a few series to hit stride, Shewmake began to mix the attack, and zero in for the night.
The Bullard Panthers muffed a punt attempt after initial first possession, and it would eventually be a stout Panther defensive effort that turned back another Pirate threat.
Bullard finally scratched the board on a 27-yard field goal from Christian Moore.
The next Pirate points went up quick as Freeman jetted 77-yards to pay dirt.
Another failed PAT attempt left the score at 12-3.
The Panthers then came back with the best answer you can have after you give up points.
Junior Landon Wheeler took the ball in full stride at the 20-, and raced 80-yards to la casa for another Panther score,
Pine Tree went to the air in the second period as Corey Thomas scooted under a 50-yard pass from Freeman, and a Montoya true kick for a 19-10 score, with 9:14 before halftime.
Not to be outdone, the Panthers and Shewmake rolled right back down the field and finished off a nine-play drive with a eight-yard pass to Nic Hooley.
Then just before halftime, another big throw from Freeman to Gabe Adams set up another 5-yard jaunt for Freeman, and a 26-16 halftime break.
The second half each team came out with adjustments from the opening half, and turned the game plans around.
Pine Tree went back to the ground and then threw a 35-yard scoring strike to Thomas again, and a 33-16 count.
Shewmake was not to be out done, the senior threw for 42-yards and ran for another 23 in a eight-play drive that paid dividends.
A big 26-yard completion to Hooley took the ball to the Pirate 13.
Three plays later, Shewmake snuck in from three-yards out .
Pine Tree then mixed the pass and run to take the ball to the Bullard four-yardline at the end off the third quarter
It took only one play to up the score to 40-23, after Sheffield scampered around the left end for his first touchdown of the season.
Coming right back, Shewmake mixed in a few short passes with a 44-yard scoring run to keep the game within reach at 40-30.
However, the ensuing kickoff ended up in Panther territory at the 13-yard line
After a huge kick return from Sheffield.
Sheffeld then blasted out the final two yards, to put the game away at 46-30.
Shewmake totaled 141-yards, threw for one touchdown and ran or two others.
Another tough 106 yards includes several times that Shewmake had no room to roam, and ran for good gains while improvising.
Bryson Lunscombe added in 65-yards and a pair of receptions, while Nic Hooley made three passes catches for 49-yards.
The Panthers will trek to play at Spring Hill next Friday night, at 7:30.
