Hall directs Rusk to a hard fought, 44-35, win over Brownsboro

Sean Rogers (15) heads to the end zone to score the first of two receiving touchdowns the senior made on Friday. Rusk moved to 2-0 in league play by putting away Brownsboro, 44-35.

RUSK — Rusk quarterback Jaylon Hall didn't seem to mind playing in cold and wet conditions Friday night.

Hall passed for two touchdowns and ran for a pair of scores to help engineer the Eagles to a 44-35 triumph over Brownsboro in a District 7-4A-II affair that was played at Jim Swink Field at Eagle Stadium.

Halls first of two touchdown passes to Sean Rogers that came with 5:16 to play in the first half actually gave the Eagles the lead for good at 24-21.

Rusk spent the rest of the game holding the Bears, who fought like warriors until the end, back.

Hall tacked on a 1-yard touchdown trot with :33 to go before halftime to extend the Eagle lead to 30-21 at the break.

Following a 2-yard touchdown by Brownsboro's Garyn Young that came with 8:17 showing on the clock in the third stanza, Brownsboro had pulled to with a deuce of the Red and Black, who led, 30-28 at the time.

A couple of minutes later Hall found Rogers on an underneath route again and Rogers caught the rock and carried it in for a 20-yard touchdown as Rusk was able to move in front 38-28, following the 2-point conversion.

Each team scored once in the final frame. Gage Wehrmann ran in from a yard out for the visitors and Hall jetted in on a 4-yard run for the Red and Black.

Wehrmann, the Bear signal caller, threw two touchdown passes in the opening half.

The first went to Caleb Booth and covered 44 yards, with the second going to Christian Avias from 24-yards out.

Rusk's first scores of the night were the result of big plays.

Jaden Rushing put the Re3d and Black on the scoreboard when he returned a kick off 90 yards for a touchdown with 5:08 to go in the first period.

With 1:33 to play in the first, Alex Jones dashed in from 63-yards out, which put Rusk ahead 16-7 at that juncture.

Jones also recovered a fumble for the Eagles, with Isiah ward picking off a Brownsboro pass and Nick Acker coming up with several tackles for loss.

Cole Williams of Brownsboro was the games leading rusher. Williams carried 19 times for 116 yards and one touchdown.

Hall led the Rusk ground attack with 72 yards on 14 carries. Jones added 56 yards on six carries.

The Eagles (2-6, 2-0) will travel to Canton, who lost 35-14 to Wills Point on Friday, next week.

Brownsboro (1-8, 0-3) will close out its regular season by hosting Bullard.
