New Summerfield needed only about five minutes to put away Trinidad once and for all.
The Lady Hornets went on a 21-0 run over the first-five minutes of the second quarter to blow up what had been a close game as the New Summerfield girls went on to defeat the Lady Trojans 54-26 in the semi-finals of the New Summerfield Tournament on Friday afternoon.
Lady Hornet senior-point guard Ana Hernandez did most of the damage as she pumped in 13 of her game-high 23 points in the second period, including one bucket from three point land in the decisive segment (three for the game).
Hernandez didn’t see as much playing time in Thursday’s tournament opener due to taking a blow to the face early in the game, but she made up for it with her gutsy defensive play and scoring proficiency against Trinidad.
Ramie Weaver chipped in with 10 points which included a 3-pointer during New Summerfield’s run in the second period. Weaver finished with a pair of treys in the game.
Leading only 11-6 after one, the 21-0 run enabled the Lady Hornets to seal the deal early as New Summerfield led 39-9 at halftime.
A basket by Stephanie Melendez at the 1:49 mark of the final period gave the Lady Hornets their biggest lead of the game, 54-23.
Aaliyah Bivins was high point maker for the Lady Trojans, scoring 11 points.
New Summerfield improves to 4-1 on the year with the win and was scheduled to play in the finals of the tournament on Saturday night against either Chireno or Elkhart.
Trinidad, who won 19 games last year and advanced to the regional quarterfinals, now stands at 2-2.
