Lon Morris men’s golf team members Brady Jones, left, and Ricky Lee, right, stand next to the leaderboard at the 2006 NJCAA Division I Men’s Golf National Championships in Ruidoso, N.M. May 16-19.

The Lon Morris College men’s golf team tied for the best finish in school history and had two members selected as All-Americans at the 2006 NJCAA Division I Men’s Golf National Championships at The Links at Sierra Blanca in Ruidoso, N.M. May 16-19.

The Bearcats were as high as second place, but finished in sixth place with a score of 271-277-281-285-1114.

“It’s not that we played so far out of our minds, it’s just that other teams just didn’t play as well,” said coach Barry Griffin of Lon Morris’ early tournament success.

“On a harder course, I think we had a better chance of finishing third or fourth. On the easier course, I was hoping we could stay in the top 10.”

Brady Jones finished in second place in the individual tournament with a score of 65-66-69-71-271 after a one-hole playoff with tournament winner Brad Smith of Indian Hills Community College.

“Brady was in the driver seat and the kid scolded it over the green and Brady had a 20 foot birdie putt,” Griffin said. “I told Brady just to play smart because he (Smith) has to get up and down the green to tie him and then the kid chips it in.

“I thought he was going to win a national championship. It was a shame that it had to end that way, but he still finished second.”

With his finish, Jones was selected to the first-team All-American team.

Ricky Lee finished tied for 11th place with a score of 69-69-71-67-276 and was named to the second-team All-American team.

Midland College won the team national championship with a score of 273-270-263-284-1090, but Lon Morris beat finished ahead No. 1 ranked Central Alabama Community College, who finished seventh.

“It was a real good tournament,” Griffin said. “We got two All-Americans out of it for the first time in a long time.”
