PARIS — The Lon Morris College women’s basketball team methodically manufactured a 34-28 halftime lead and then spent the final half turning back repeated comeback attempts by the Paris Junior College Lady Dragons to escape Hunt Center with a 75-72 Region XIV victory Wednesday night.

Paris (10-13, 3-9 in conference play) never led in the game that was only tied on one occasion, 2-2, at the 18:21 mark of the opening period.

LMC (12-8, 5-5) was up by as many as 10 points, 73-63, with 2:43 to play, but the Lady Dragons continued to scratch and claw their way back into the game.

The Lady Dragons managed to have a chance at knotting the score in the waning moments as a loose ball bounced off the foot of LMC’s Ambra Smith and trickled out of bounds with 23 ticks left on the clock.

PJC tried to get the play called and set up without calling timeout, but was unable to do so due to intense pressure by the Lady Bearcat defense.

The Lady Dragons finally took the timeout with 9 seconds remaining in the game.

Laporsha Alexander launched a 3-point shot in the final seconds, but the shot hit the window and bounced off as time expired.

Four Lady ’Cats ended up in double figures, paced by Chrystal Harrison, a freshman from Lake Charles, La., with 19 points.

Breaunna Ellison also pitched in 19; Jasmine Reeves netted 11; and Smith put in 10.

PJC was sparked by Alexander’s 17 points, with Necia Smith tossing in 14.

LMC continues conference play at 2 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Panola College.
