It was a good opening night Thursday for Lon Morris College basketball teams as both the men’s and women’s team won over visiting Weatherford College.

The Lady Bearcats rolled to a 70-55 win while the LMC men took a hard-fought 78-75 home victory at the Vivian and Bob Smith Gym.

“It was good to get the first win,” Lon Morris College men’s coach Dale Dotson said. “For the first night out, it was all right. We have a few things we could do better that is for sure.”

Lon Morris came out slowly and felt behind by eight points, then got their offense in gear to go ahead by three. At the half Lon Morris held a 41-37 advantage.

Down the stretch- the Bearcats used timely rebounds and sharp shooting to go ahead by seven points.

“We kept the lead at five to seven point most of the second half,” Dotson said. “Weatherford tried to foul us and used a press. But we took care of the basketball and worked the clock. We hit some free throws to add to our lead. Weatherford hit a halfcourt shot at the buzzer to make it a three-point game.”

Freshman Ridas Pulkauninkas from Lithuania poured in 23 for high point honors for LMC closely followed by Michael Morris with 18, including two 3-pointers.Derrick Moore had 14,Vincent Talbot and Mirza Ahmetbasic had 11 points each.

Lon Morris had 20 team fouls and made 17 of 23 free throws.

“We had several players look better in this game, than in our recent scrimmages,” Dotson said. “Ridas has a real good game, he’s going to be a good player. Derrick had some big rebounds, he played hard and so did Mike Morris.”

Dotson continued, “I think this is going to be a team which gets better each time out. They are still learning to play together and hopefully they will be improving. Right now we aren’t a team which can overwhelm anybody, but maybe we will be later.”

The Bearcats will host Montgomery County at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
